Rent is the largest monthly expense but offered zero rewards, unlike dining or travel. Paying by credit card incurred a ~3% fee, so everyone paid by check/ACH. Landlords had no loyalty levers to prevent churn; a tenant would leave for a $50 cheaper apartment across the street.
