Wind and solar are intermittent. Storing gigawatt-hours of energy for night/calm periods using lithium-ion batteries is prohibitively expensive and environmentally taxing (mining). Pumped hydro is geographically limited. The grid needs a scalable, non-degrading mechanical battery.

Built the EVx system (Rudong, China). It is a massive structure with automated cranes. When power is cheap (excess wind), motors lift 24-ton blocks to the top. When power is needed, blocks are lowered, spinning the motors as generators. The system uses advanced software to manage the kinetic energy and keep output smooth.
