Executive Summary

ANALYST: COI RESEARCH

Migration of live broadcast infrastructure to the cloud (AWS), allowing production teams to switch live feeds for the Olympics remotely without shipping hardware to the venue.

rate_review Analyst Verdict

"End of the 'OB Truck' era. Traditional sports broadcasting requires shipping massive trucks and hundreds of people to the stadium. Cloud production virtualizes the control room, saving logistics costs and enabling massive scale (pop-up channels for every sport)."

warning The Challenge

Broadcasting the Olympics (Tokyo/Beijing) involves thousands of hours of simultaneous content. Sending equipment and crews to cover every minor sport is cost-prohibitive. Pandemic restrictions further limited travel. The broadcaster needed to produce hundreds of feeds remotely.

psychology The Solution

Built the 'Discovery Connected Cloud'. Cameras at the venue send raw feeds to the cloud via IP (SRT/JPEG XS). The production switcher, audio mixer, and graphics engine run as software instances on AWS. Directors sit in London or Paris, controlling the cloud software to cut the show. Only cameras and mics are on-site.
